Academic Curriculum
A rigorous and relevant curriculum encourages students to be creative and collaborative as they expand their critical thinking and develop new skills.
At Bronx Arts, students receive interdisciplinary daily instruction in Reading, Writing, and Math. Science and Social Studies topics are integrated in Reading and Writing.

Reading
Students are immersed in an interdisciplinary core reading program that builds vocabulary, content knowledge, and exposure to a variety of genres. Our program is well balanced with classic and contemporary literature written by authors who look like us and come from communities like ours.
Students in lower grades receive daily phonics instruction. In addition to classroom instruction at grade-level, students also receive daily, individualized support based on their reading needs and level.

Writing
Students are exposed to the 6+1 Traits of Writing Model to understand the characteristics of high-quality writing. Using a writers’ workshop framework, this model identifies seven qualities of good writing: Ideas, Organization, Word Choice (vocabulary), Sentence Fluency, Voice, and Conventions (grammar and sentence mechanics).

Math
Grades K-5 use i-Ready Classroom Mathematics, an online custom math curriculum that provides students with differentiated instruction and supports them on their individual paths to math success with a personalized math curriculum. This customized instruction provides teachers with consistent insight into student comprehension, allowing them to monitor students’ progress and help them prepare for standards-based assessments.
Grades 6-8 use the Illustrative Mathematics program, augmented with i-Ready Classroom Mathematics and teacher-created daily skills.

Science
Our Science program follows New York State learning standards for all grades. We use a STEAM model (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) to integrate the arts into science instruction.
Middle School students take three years of integrated Life, Earth, and Physical science that meet the requirements of the Next Generation Learning Standards. Students engage with hands-on experiences, conduct investigation-based design projects, and research natural phenomena in order to better understand the science of our world.

Social Studies
Grades K-5 use the New York State Social Studies framework as a guide to develop young historians. Authentic literature and nonfiction texts are integrated into the reading program to build content knowledge and practice Social Studies skills such as interviewing and understanding how to read a map.
Students in grades 6-8 take three years of American History, studying the effects of colonization on the indigenous people of North America through the present day. Students explore the central themes of the American narrative through diverse perspectives and with a social justice lens by examining primary sources and analyzing arguments made throughout American history.

Technology
Bronx Arts is a 2:1 device school for grades 3-8, allowing students to learn beyond the school day with access to the same online educational platforms used in school. Every classroom is equipped with the latest interactive whiteboard.

Social & Emotional Learning
Social-emotional learning at Bronx Arts helps students at all levels develop the mindsets, skills, attitudes and emotional regulation needed to succeed in school, career, and life beyond the classroom.
Our elementary school students have daily opportunities to learn language and skills to identify, discuss, and process feelings that help develop self-regulation and emotional awareness.
Middle school students meet with an advisor in a structured environment to address a range of topics from dealing with social media, to coping with difficult feelings, to writing resumes and preparing for an interview. Students thrive with one-on-one support as they develop 21st-century interpersonal skills.
