THE
BRONX
ARTS
COMMUNITY
Bronx Arts is a participant in a larger movement to revitalize the Hunts Point community. The specific role of Bronx Arts is to provide an arts-focused, academically rigorous school. In this role, Bronx Arts joins recent significant projects in the neighborhood including new housing, a recreation facility built by the Parks Department, a new post office, and efforts currently underway to develop the waterfront and build a green market. The school is located within walking distance to The Point Community Development Corporation, one of our primary partners.
In keeping with the overall development of Hunts Point, Bronx Arts' new permanent home is a state-of-the-art facility in a former bread distributorship. Construction began in December 2003, based on designs developed jointly by architects, parents, staff members, trustees and community members. The 2004-2005 school year was our first in the new building. The facility serves not only as the school site, but also as a community gathering space. Gallery and performance spaces are used to showcase the talent of students, staff and families and are also available for public use. The school will transform the block on which it is located into a vibrant and special place. All told, the facility will be yet another major component in the ongoing transformation of the Hunts Point community.
As of August, 2004, our permanent address is in our brand-new facility at 950 Longfellow Avenue, Bronx, NY 10474.
